*UMUAHIA, Abia State* – The Commissioner of Police, Abia State Command, *CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, has charged operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit, VCRU, to remain proactive and intelligence-driven in tackling crime across the state.

CP Afolabi gave the charge on Tuesday, August 12, 2026, during a strategic briefing with officers of the VCRU at the Command Headquarters in Umuahia.

In his address, the CP commended the unit for its critical role in sustaining peace and security in Abia. He, however, cautioned that periods of relative calm must not lead to complacency.

“Criminal elements often use such times to regroup and plan,” he said.

“I therefore charge you to remain proactive, alert, and unwavering in your efforts to ensure the safety of the state.”

The Commissioner announced plans to strengthen the operational capacity of the Command through targeted training.

He disclosed that a combat training exercise has been scheduled for next week and directed the VCRU to urgently identify all operational gaps and combat-related needs for prompt intervention.

CP Afolabi further stressed the need to intensify intelligence gathering, noting that “all operations must be intelligence-driven to achieve optimal results.”

Reiterating the importance of discipline, the CP described it as the bedrock of the Nigeria Police Force and a core value championed by the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Tunji Disu.

He urged officers to maintain the highest standards of professionalism, respect for human rights, and integrity in the discharge of their duties.

The VCRU is one of the Command’s specialized tactical units deployed to respond to violent crimes and maintain public order across Abia State.
