UMUAHIA — Abia State Government has announced a strategic partnership with LaLiga and the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria to host “LaLiga Week in Abia State” scheduled to run from November to December 2026.

The initiative, according to government, will feature series of sports activities and activations designed to engage local talents, build skills and open up global opportunities for Abia youths.

Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this on Monday while briefing newsmen on outcome of State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.

Kanu said the programme provides one of strategic ways of empowering youths through sports.

He said, “During the week, there will be a range of activities and activations in collaboration with La Liga and the Spanish Embassy here in Nigeria. This programme provides one of the strategic ways of empowering our youth through sports.”

The Commissioner also said the Ministry of Youth and Sports recently visited correctional centres in Aba and Umuahia in line with its broad welfare and rehabilitation agenda to assess legal, health and welfare needs of inmates.

He said outreach identified cases requiring legal aid, bail assistance, medical and family support for 20 inmates being prepared for First School Leaving Certificate examinations.

“Also, skill acquisition programmes were assessed during the visit, with shortages of tools, equipment, and materials identified as major challenges to effective rehabilitation,” he added.

On health, Kanu said about 3,003,250 insecticide-treated nets will be distributed across the state during 2026 Abia Mass Insecticide-Treated Net Campaign to be formally launched on Friday, October 16.

He said exercise is collaboration between Federal Ministry of Health, National Malaria Elimination Programme and Abia State Government through State Ministry of Health.

On road infrastructure, Kanu said government will flag off construction of two roads in Aba — Old Express Road (3.955km) and Uratta Road (3.09km) — on October 21.

He said work has already commenced at sites prior to formal flag-off, noting that roads are part of Abia State Integrated Infrastructure Development Project, ABSIID, sponsored by African Development Bank, AfDB.

“A lot more of such ABSIID-sponsored roads will be flagged off in due course. Currently, there are 53 direct-labour locations in the state where work is going on,” Kanu said.
