Abia Police Commence 10-day Cybercrime Training To Combat Financial Fraud, Identity Theft 

CP Afolabi Says Aba’s Digital Security As Critical As Physical Safety

UMUAHIA, Abia State – The Abia State Police Command has commenced a 10-day Cybercrime Capacity-Building Training Workshop as part of efforts to strengthen intelligence-led policing and confront emerging digital threats in the state.

The workshop was flagged off on Monday, September 7, 2026, by the Commissioner of Police, CP Wilfred Olutokunbo Afolabi, in collaboration with the Cyber Shield Africa Initiative.

Participants were drawn from the Cybercrime Section, State Criminal Investigation Department, SCID, State Intelligence Bureau, SIB, and Violent Crime Response Unit Intelligence, VCRU.

Officers from sister security agencies including the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC are also participating.

In his address, CP Afolabi said a review of the Command’s operational structure revealed the need to strengthen its cybercrime response.

He noted that financial and cybercrimes remain among the most prevalent offences, particularly in a commercial hub like Aba, where digital security is as critical as physical safety.

The CP reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to making Abia State a hostile environment for identity theft, impersonation, financial fraud, and other cyber-related crimes.

He stressed that tackling these threats requires modern skills and techniques, hence the engagement of experts to equip officers with globally relevant investigative competencies.

Afolabi said the training aligns with the vision of the Inspector-General of Police to confront sophisticated crimes with modern methods, and his rejection of obsolete policing approaches.

He expressed confidence that the training will enhance the capacity of participants to discharge their duties with professionalism and efficiency.

He urged the officers to remain focused, disciplined, and fully engaged, noting that “continuous training is essential, as untrained personnel pose risks to themselves, their organization and the public they protect.”

The Commissioner maintained that the initiative is designed to strengthen public safety and improve the overall security of Abia State.
