Otti’s Transport Revolution Earns National Recognition, as CIOTA Storms Abia
The transportation reforms of Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti’s administration received a major boost as the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIOTA) commended the state’s strides in infrastructure renewal, green transportation and urban mobility.
The transport professionals, who where in Government House Umuahia on Wednesday ahead of their Southeast Conference, said the state’s impressive investments in roads, transport infrastructure and sustainable mobility initiatives influenced their decision to host the regional gathering in Abia.
Receiving the delegation on behalf of the Governor Alex Otti, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Pastor Caleb Ajagba, described transportation as the backbone of economic development and a critical component of the administration’s transformation agenda.
The conference theme, “Advancing Urban Transport Through Sustainable Urban Mobility and Green Energy Solutions,” resonates strongly with the vision of this administration, Gov Otti said.
“The truth is that without transportation, the economy would be completely shut down. Transportation remains one of the most important drivers of development anywhere in the world,” he said.
Gov. Otti noted that the state government’s commitment to transportation development is reflected in its massive investment in infrastructure since he assumed office in May 2023.
According to him, the administration recognised from the outset that a modern transportation system could not thrive without quality infrastructure, prompting the declaration of a state of emergency in key sectors, including infrastructure.
“You cannot talk about a robust transportation system without good roads and the supporting infrastructure. That is why this government has invested heavily in road construction and rehabilitation across the state,” Gov Otti stated.
He added that roads have been reconstructed and rehabilitated across the 17 local government areas, opening up communities, improving connectivity and creating opportunities for businesses to thrive.
Gov Otti also highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen alternative modes of transportation, including plans for the proposed Abia Airport and other strategic transport projects designed to position the state as a major economic hub.
He further praised the Ministry of Transport for introducing electric buses and other environmentally friendly initiatives aimed at reducing carbon emissions while improving public transportation.
“What the government is doing with electric buses and other green transport initiatives is in line with global best practices. When people can move comfortably and safely without polluting the environment, their quality of life improves significantly,” Gov. Otti said.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, said the decision to host the conference in Abia was a recognition of the state’s progress in transportation and infrastructure development.
“Transportation can only operate effectively in a safe and conducive environment, and Abia has provided that environment. Beyond moving people and goods, transportation drives commerce, social integration and economic growth,” Ukaegbu said.
Ukaegbu described Abia as one of Nigeria’s foremost commercial centres, noting that transportation remains central to the state’s economic aspirations.
He highlighted some of the government’s achievements in the sector, including the introduction of electric buses and the development of a central transportation hub designed to support seamless movement of people and goods.
“Governor Alex Otti has shown tremendous commitment to transforming transportation in Abia. The green buses, modern transport facilities and other projects underway demonstrate that commitment,” Ukaegbu said.
Ukaegbu expressed confidence that the conference would further showcase Abia’s progress and strengthen partnerships aimed at advancing transportation development across the Southeast and Nigeria as a whole.
Earlier, Chairman of Education, Training and Research of CIOTA, Professor Callistus Ibeh, said Abia’s growing reputation for innovation and infrastructure development made it the preferred choice for the Institute’s Southeast Conference.
“We have travelled across different regions of the country, but Abia stood out. We have seen a government that understands how to create value for its people and use public resources for public good,” Ibeh said.
Ibeh commended Gov. Otti’s administration for its commitment to organised transportation and sustainable development, describing the state’s achievements as worthy of emulation.
“When discussions about green transportation came up, I found practical examples right here in Abia. What we have seen is evidence of visionary leadership and effective teamwork among government officials,” he noted.
Ibeh formally invited the state government to participate in the conference and future national transport engagements, stressing the importance of continuous professional development and policy participation.
“We want Abia to continue playing a leading role in national conversations on transportation. Investment in knowledge and training is never wasted because it ultimately creates value for society,” he added.
The visit underscored Abia’s growing profile as a destination for investment, innovation and sustainable development, with stakeholders agreeing that transportation remains a key pillar in the state’s ongoing economic transformation.
