The first cohort of the 2026 Abia State Leadership Academy (ASLA) Youth Leadership Bootcamp Programme has ended with young participants showcasing innovative solutions to challenges in healthcare, environmental management and agriculture.

The conclusion followed the presentation and evaluation of capstone projects developed by the participants during the intensive leadership programme, marking another phase in Governor Alex Otti’s administration’s investment in youth development and leadership preparation.

The programme, which took place at Government College Umuahia on Friday during the presentation of capstone project.

The capstone project presentations provided the participants an opportunity to translate the lessons from the academy into practical solutions to identified problems in Abia and Nigeria.

Diamond group presented a plastic recycling initiative designed to work with the Abia State Environmental Protection Agency (ASEPA) to collect, sort and aggregate plastic waste for recycling.

Gold group presented Abia State Health Connect, a proposed digital healthcare solution aimed at reducing delays in medical treatment caused by difficulties in retrieving patients’ records.

The proposed solution is a Patient QR Health Card, which the team said would enable authorised healthcare personnel to access essential patient information through QR-code or NFC technology.

Project Elevate and Entrepreneurship Development Hub (EDH) developed by the Emerald Group, is a practical plan aimed at helping entrepreneurs in Abia State move beyond simply surviving in business to building enterprises that can grow, create jobs and contribute meaningfully to the state’s economy.

Through Akwete Luxe, the Ruby group, plans to support and train artisans, create jobs, encourage younger generations to embrace weaving, and connect authentic Akwete products with international fashion, tourism and luxury markets.

The platinum group presented a Waste-to-Wealth Initiative. This involves collecting waste from busy markets such as Ariaria, Cemetery and other public spaces across the state, and converting suitable waste materials into organic manure.

Addressing the participants, at the close of the cohort 1, the President of ASLA, Prof Kenneth Kalu appreciated Governor Otti for supporting the initiative, describing it as an intentional investment in developing a generation of young Abians capable of contributing meaningfully to society.

According to Kalu, the impact of the programme could ultimately exceed the expectations of its organisers.

“I told His Excellency that the impact of this programme, the benefits, is going to be bigger than what any one of us ever contemplated,” he said.

Kalu said the real test of the programme would begin after they leave the training environment.

“What you do when you leave here, that’s what matters. What matters is what you become after leaving here.

“You have to lead yourself. You have to lead wherever you are from, your family, from your school, wherever you are,” Kalu said.

Kalu urged the young people to see themselves as leaders of today rather than waiting for the traditional description of youths as ‘leaders of tomorrow.’

He also charged them to allow their values to guide their decisions and resist negative peer pressure.

“Let your values drive you, not your needs, and not your greed,” he said.

The participants were also reminded that their future professions or positions should not determine their commitment to service and integrity.

“Some of you will become governors, and president, if God permits.

“But wherever you are, whatever you become, hold on to your values,” he said.

He urged them to become good citizens who would contribute to making their families, communities and the state better.

The capstone presentations marked the formal end of Cohort 1 of the 2026 Abia State Leadership Academy Youth Leadership Programme.

Following the presentations, questions and evaluation, President of ASLA announced the Diamond group as the winning team of the Cohort 1 capstone competition, while Emerald group and gold group emerged as 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up respectively

Kalu also announced prizes for outstanding teams, including N200,000 for first position and N100,000 for the participated groups, with a recommendation that the funds be invested in further research and development of their projects.

The conclusion of the cohort 1 does not, however, mark the end of the 2026 academy programme, as Cohort 2 is expected to follow as part of the academy’s leadership development initiative.

Kalu also announced plans for a grand graduation ceremony involving the cohorts on August 29 at the International Conference Centre, Umuahia, where Governor Otti is expected to interact with the participants.

Transport support was also announced to enable participants to attend the graduation ceremony.

In his highlight, the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Emmanuel Meribole, thanked Gov Otti for the good things he is doing in the state and for investing in the youths

He prayed for wisdom, courage, humility and integrity for the young leaders.

Meribole prayed for the participants to become instruments of positive change and use their talents in the service of their communities, Abia State and Nigeria.
