Otti Unveils Abia Agricultural Database to Aid Data Collection, Farmer Identification, Interventions

Governor Alex Otti has unveiled the Abia State Agricultural Dynamic Database System, the Abia-Adds, a digital platform designed to enhance agricultural data collection, farmer identification, planning, and interventions across all Local Government Areas.

Speaking at the event in Umuahia, Otti described the initiative as a modern, secure and user friendly platform designed to capture, organise, analyse and share Agricultural data across the State in real time.

Represented by the Chief of Staff, Caleb Ajagba, the Governor noted that farmers had been confronted with the challenges of reliable data, predictable access to inputs, extension services, finance and markets, of which Abia-Adds seeks to address.

He said the platform will enable farmers to be known, counted and supported, thereby improving their access to inputs, finance and markets, while youth will find opportunities in agri-tech, logistics, processing and data services.

“When fully implemented, it will help link farmers to finance and insurance, thereby facilitating verifiable credit histories, digital production records and access to tailored financial products, Otti said.

“It will help support extension services and advisory delivery, enabling agro-advisors to reach farmers with location-specific, climate-smart and crop-specific guidance via mobile channels and local extension networks.

“It will help track input, distribution and program implementation, ensuring transparency, reducing linkages and strengthening accountability in public and private programs.

“It will also help analytical tools for policymakers, allowing us to measure the impact of interventions, forecast news, monitor food security and plan emergency responses.’

Otti assured that his administration will provide the policy, budgetary support and political-will needed to sustain Abia-Adds as well as invest in infrastructure, training and necessary institutional arrangements as its long-term commitment.

In his keynote address, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze said the database will capture farmers’ profiles and production data, digitised cooperative records, dashboards and analytics for rapid decisions, marking the beginning of a statewide agricultural intelligence system.

“This project is anchored on the vision of His Excellency, Dr Alex Chioma Otti, OFR and fully to establish a sustainable, competitive and resilient agriculture sector that will boost food production, create job opportunities and contribute to Abia’s economic growth,” Agbaeze said.

“The project was not conceived lightly. It is the result of deliberate commitment, consultation, and collaboration.”

Agbaeze said the platform has the potential to create jobs for young people through MSME- led extension services as well as support smart extension services, mechanisation planning, supply chain traceability, climate modeling, and credit scoring in the future.

He called on farmers to embrace the system, urging community leaders and cooperatives to organize their members, stressing that every stakeholder must become an ambassador of the transformation.

Stakeholders at the unveiling believe that the Abia-Adds will bring farmers to what termed Agriculture of the now, adding that the new method of smart agriculture will enhance their capacity.
