Abia to Benefit from L-PRES as FG, World Bank Delegation Visits Agric Commissioner

A high-powered delegation from the Federal Ministry of Livestock Development, in collaboration with the World Bank Group today paid a courtesy visit to the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Abia State, in his office in Umuahia

The visit forms part of ongoing engagements under the Livestock Productivity and Resilience Support Project (L-PRES), a strategic initiative aimed at improving livestock productivity, enhancing resilience, and promoting the commercialization of livestock production systems in Nigeria. The project also seeks to strengthen the country’s capacity to respond effectively to emergencies within the livestock sector.

During the meeting, the delegation briefed the Honourable Commissioner on the status of Abia State’s onboarding into the L-PRES Project and outlined key components earmarked for the state. These include the establishment of a Feed *Reference* Laboratory at Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike – *one of only two in the whole country* – and the ongoing construction of a Model Veterinary Hospital in Umuahia, which has now reached the roofing stage.

The delegation was led by the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, and included Dr. Chidozie Anyiro, Co-Task Team Leader of L-PRES from the World Bank Group, as well as Dr. Gabriel Ugwu, Animal Husbandry Specialist at the National Coordination Office.

Speaking during the visit, the Honourable Commissioner for Agriculture, Abia State, Dr. Cliff Agbaeze, FCIB, reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to Agricultural transformation, particularly within the livestock sub-sector.

“Abia State is fully prepared to key into the L-PRES initiative. This project aligns perfectly with *the vision of His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti* to modernize livestock production, improve value chains, and create sustainable economic opportunities for our people. We assure our partners of maximum cooperation to ensure successful implementation,” he stated.

He further commended the Federal Government and its development partners for prioritizing livestock development, noting that the veterinary hospital project—already at the roofing stage—alongside other interventions, will significantly boost productivity, enhance food security, and create employment opportunities across the state.

Also speaking, the National Project Coordinator of L-PRES, Dr. Sanusi Abubakar, expressed satisfaction with the level of commitment demonstrated by Abia State towards the project.

“We are impressed with the progress recorded in Abia State, particularly the advancement of the veterinary hospital project. This clearly shows the state’s readiness to fully implement L-PRES. We remain committed to supporting Abia in achieving improved livestock productivity and resilience,” he noted.

The visit marks a significant milestone in Abia State’s journey toward becoming a major hub for livestock production and Agribusiness in Nigeria.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture, Mrs. Ijeoma Adanma Aguwa, PhD, alongside Directors of the Ministry, were present at the meeting.
