Abia Govt to Demolish Structures on Waterways along Ehimiri Axis in Umuahia
_UCDA says exercise follows expiration of notice to property owners_
UMUAHIA, Abia State – The Abia State Government says it will, at any moment from now, commence the removal of structures built on waterways that obstruct the free movement of water along the Ehimiri axis of Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.
The General Manager of the Umuahia Capital Development Authority, UCDA, Mr. Kingsley Agomoh, disclosed this to newsmen on Tuesday.
Mr. Agomoh said the demolition follows the expiration of the deadline earlier given to owners of the affected structures.
He explained that the natural waterways in the area have been overrun by structural development, resulting in flooding and drastic ecosystem disruption that could affect livability in the area in the long run.
According to him, it has become pertinent to safeguard the natural waterways and ensure a proper drainage system in that part of the state capital.
The UCDA General Manager revealed that the offices of the National Population Commission and the Federal Pay Office along the axis have already been overrun by buildings erected on the waterways.
He maintained that the exercise is in line with the Development Control Regulations 2021.
Mr. Agomoh said the waterways stretch from Une Isieke, through Nkata behind the Abia State House of Assembly, to the International Conference Centre fence, through Winners’ Church, down to Ehimiri.
He stressed that fences and structures along the entire corridor ought to be removed to give way for the free movement of water.
The UCDA boss reiterated the present administration’s determination to protect lives and property by ensuring a conducive environment for human habitation.
He said the enforcement is part of Governor Alex Otti’s urban renewal agenda aimed at addressing flooding, restoring drainage channels, and promoting sustainable development in Umuahia.
