Abia Govt Bans Kekes From Long-distance Routes, Cites Safety Concerns

*UMUAHIA, Abia State* – The Abia State Government has directed all tricycle operators, popularly known as Keke to stop operating on long-distance routes from Umuahia to Obowu, Owerri, Ohafia and Arochukwu with immediate effect.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, said the directive is aimed at ensuring sanity, order and safety on roads across the state.

The Commissioner warned that any tricycle operator found violating the directive will be arrested and the tricycle impounded.

He urged all Keke operators and members of the public to comply fully.

*Clarification: Not a Total Ban*

Providing further clarification, Dr. Ukaegbu said tricycles have not been banned from operating in Abia State.

“Keke operators are not banned from operating in Abia State. The restriction only applies to the use of tricycles for long-distance passenger transportation to destinations such as Owerri, Obowo, Mbaise, and Arochukwu,” he stated.

According to him, the measure was introduced to safeguard the lives of both passengers and operators.

“Tricycles are not designed for long-distance travel and the associated safety risks,” the Commissioner explained, noting that the government remains committed to a safe, regulated and efficient transportation system.

Transport unions and commuters have been advised to use approved commercial vehicles for inter-city and interstate travel, while _Keke_ operations within cities, towns and short intra-city routes remain permitted.
