Okada Rider Killed By Falling Tree in Uyo

A young commercial motorcycle operator, popularly known as Okada, was killed on Thursday morning, August 13, 2026, after a tree fell on him along Abak Road in Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital.

The incident occurred opposite the Ibom Hall, Cultural Centre axis, throwing commuters and residents into panic during the early hours.

Eyewitnesses said the rider was navigating the busy road when the tree suddenly gave way and crashed directly on him.

“It was a terrible sight. The tree just fell and trapped him under it before anyone could react,” said an eyewitness.

“By the time people rushed to help, he was already dead.”

Emergency responders later arrived at the scene and removed the body, which was taken to an undisclosed mortuary.

As of press time, the identity of the deceased had not been officially confirmed, and relevant authorities had not issued a statement on the incident.

The fallen tree also caused a brief disruption to vehicular movement on that axis of Abak Road before officials of the relevant agencies cleared the debris and restored traffic flow.

The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for urgent action on environmental safety in Uyo.

Residents and road users are appealing to the Uyo Capital City Development Authority, UCCDA, and the Akwa Ibom State Ministry of Environment to carry out an immediate assessment of aging and weak trees along major roads in the state capital.

They warned that with the rains intensifying, more trees pose a risk to motorists, pedestrians, and traders who do business along road corridors.

The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety and environmental hazards in urban areas across the state.
