Abia Govt Prohibits Commercial Motorcycle Operations in Metropolitan Areas of Umuahia, Aba, Ohafia

Abia State Government has announced a ban on commercial motorcycle operations, popularly known as Okada, within the metropolitan areas of Umuahia, Aba, and Ohafia.

The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this in a press release, stating that Governor Alex Otti has approved the directive, which will take effect from Monday, June 22, 2026.

According to the government, the policy is aimed at strengthening security, improving public safety, enhancing traffic management, and promoting a more organized transportation system in the affected urban centres.

Commercial motorcycle operators have been directed to stop operations within the designated areas before the commencement date. Security agencies and relevant enforcement authorities have been mandated to ensure strict compliance.

The government warned that anyone found violating the order will be arrested, while the motorcycle involved will be confiscated in accordance with the law.

Residents, transport operators, community leaders, and members of the public have been urged to cooperate with authorities in implementing the directive for the overall safety and development of the state.
