Abia on Verge of History with Global Para Badminton Championships
Plans are on top gear for the hosting for two major International para badminton events – Abia Para Badminton International and All Africa Para Badminton Championships – in Abia State.
The events, sanctioned by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) and the Badminton Confederation of Africa (BCA) will take place from September 30 to October 12, 2025, in Umuahia.
Speaking at News briefing, Deputy Governor Ikechukwu Emetu, who chairs the main Organizing Committee,
described the events as a turning point in the state’s sports history.
“Hosting these championships is more than a sporting achievement. It is a statement of our capacity, our hospitality, and our vision,” he said

“The championships are expected to attract Officials and Sports enthusiasts from across Africa and around the world, with participation from over 224 athletes from 16 Countries.
This influx is anticipated to boost Abia’s local economy, hospitality, tourism, and small businesses.”
The Deputy Governor highlighted the benefits of hosting the tournaments, including increased activity in the hospitality, tourism, and transport sectors, as well as inspiration to Abia youths.

Emetu urged all athletes who have indicated interest to compete in the championships to do so with every sense of determination and pride.
The National President of the Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr Francis Orbih, who joined virtually, appreciated Governor Otti for his commitment and support towards the development of sports, particularly para-badminton.
Orbih assured that the country’s governing body would provide full support to ensure success in the championship.
the Commissioner for Youth and Sports development in the state, Nwaobilor Ananaba, thanked the Governor for providing all logistics needed for the competition, including a wheelchair-enable bus for transportation of athletes during the championships.
Earlier, the 2nd Vice Chairman, Para Badminton Federation of Nigeria, Mr. Ekeoma Samuel who described the event as historic, revealed that over 224 athletes from 16 countries have already indicated interest in participating in the two championships.
