Suspect Arrested After Allegedly Killing Mother In Osaa Ukwu, Obingwa LGA

OSAA UKWU, OBINGWA — The suspect in the Osaa Ukwu matricide case, Livingstone Nwakanma, who allegedly hacked his mother to death with a machete, has been arrested.

Nwakanma, son of the deceased, was apprehended after he fled the scene of the incident that occurred in the early hours of Saturday at Osaa Ukwu in Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

It would be recalled that the deceased, identified as Daa Nwaigbe, a trader who sells food items at Abia Ukwu Osaa, was pounding Ukpotoro with her two daughters while her husband was at the backyard when the attack occurred.

According to the husband, Nwakanma, who had allegedly been misbehaving for over four years, attacked his mother with a machete, cutting her neck and causing her to die instantly, after claiming he was going to Nwaorji’s place.

A woman fetching water had raised alarm shouting “Nwakanma leeeeee ichoro igbu nne gi?” meaning “Nwakanma, do you want to kill your mother?”, prompting the father to rush to rescue his wife. The suspect also allegedly attempted to harm his father before escaping.

Nemesis has now caught up with him following his arrest. Sources in the community described the act as dastardly, highly condemnable and a desecration of the land, noting that he had no right to take a life he could not create.

The suspect is expected to be handed over to security agencies for further investigation and prosecution.

As of the time of this report, there has not been any official statement from the Abia State Police Command on the incident.
