Otti Unveils Umuomaiukwu Smart School, Declares Education Abia’s Biggest Investment

Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to transforming education in Abia State, declaring that education remains the state’s greatest investment and the foundation for building a prosperous future.

Speaking during the commissioning of the Umuomaiukwu Smart School in Isiala Ngwa North Local Government Area on Wednesday, Otti said the future of Abia would be driven not by natural resources but by the knowledge, creativity and innovation of its people.

The school is the second of the 17 Smart Schools being established across the state’s 17 local government areas under the Abia Smart School Initiative, following the inauguration of the first facility in Ogbo Central Smart School in Ubakala, Umuahia South LGA, two weeks ago.

According to the governor, the initiative is designed to expose children to modern, technology-driven learning while preparing them to compete in a rapidly changing global economy.

“The ultimate measure of a society’s aspiration is in the size of the resources it commits to the education of its people,” Otti said.

“Investing in quality education is not just about producing people with certificates. It is about raising minds that can create solutions, challenge old ideas and make life better for everyone.”

He explained that the Smart Schools were intentionally designed to move pupils away from rote learning to practical, experiential learning in an environment that encourages innovation, critical thinking and excellence.

Otti noted that his administration remains committed to delivering all 17 Smart Schools across the state, describing the project as one of the biggest investments in Abia’s future.

“Wealth today is no longer measured by what is buried beneath the ground. Prosperity now depends on the value of ideas and the ability of people to create solutions that improve society,” he said.

Otti commended the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, and members of the implementation team for delivering the project, while also appreciating the host community, parents and other stakeholders for supporting the initiative.

Addressing the pupils, Otti assured them that learning in the Smart School would be completely free, urging them to make the most of the opportunity provided by government.

“You have no reason not to succeed. Study hard, ask questions, dream big and never stop learning. Government has taken care of your fees and everything you need to learn in this school,” he said.

He also announced that exceptional pupils would benefit from local and international scholarship opportunities, stressing that his administration would continue to reward excellence wherever it is found.

“We are an excellence-driven administration. Those who distinguish themselves academically will be given greater opportunities through scholarships and other incentives,” Otti added.

The governor warned against vandalism of public infrastructure, saying anyone caught damaging facilities at any of the Smart Schools would face the full weight of the law.

He disclosed that the school is equipped with 24-hour internet service, CCTV surveillance cameras and other security systems to ensure both the safety of the facility and uninterrupted learning.

“Anyone who attempts to vandalise or steal from this school will be caught and treated as a saboteur. Every corner of this facility is under surveillance,” he warned.

Otti urged Abians to continue supporting government’s efforts to restore the standard of education in the state.

“Education remains the number one industry in Abia because it is the key to unlocking our future. We are laying a solid foundation of knowledge, innovation and curiosity, and I have no doubt that the future of this state is bright,” he said.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Elder Goodluck Ubochi, said the Smart School initiative reflects Governor Otti’s determination to make quality education accessible to every child, irrespective of location or background.

He explained that the project is not merely about constructing modern buildings but about creating an educational system that prepares children to compete globally through innovation, creativity and digital learning.

Also speaking, Chairman of the Abia State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), Lydia Onuoha, said the Smart School initiative aligns with the state’s education reform agenda and is aimed at producing children who are equipped with the skills needed for the future.

She disclosed that the Umuomaiukwu Smart School currently accommodates 261 pupils with 23 trained teachers and features smart classrooms, artificial intelligence-enabled learning systems, virtual reality facilities, ICT laboratories, a digital library, Starlink internet, CCTV surveillance, solar-powered infrastructure, a modern sick bay, a girls’ room for menstrual hygiene support and a child-friendly safe space.

According to her, the state government is working towards establishing 200 Smart Classrooms across the 17 local government areas, describing the project as a major step in repositioning public education in Abia.

“We are not just building schools; we are building the future of Abia. We are raising a generation that will compete confidently anywhere in the world,” Onuoha said.

In his keynote address, renowned author and scholar, Professor Okey Ndibe, described Otti as a leader whose lifelong commitment to excellence is now reflecting in the rapid transformation taking place across Abia State.

Ndibe said investment in education remains the most valuable investment any government can make in today’s knowledge-driven world.

“The world is now driven by knowledge. Any society that is serious about its future must invest in education, and Governor Otti is doing exactly that,” he said.

He praised the governor for assembling competent professionals to drive governance and urged Abians to sustain the current development trajectory.

“For many years, people spoke about Abia for the wrong reasons. Today, the story has changed. Everywhere I go, people speak about the quality of leadership in Abia,” Ndibe noted.
