Abia Targets 100 Electric Buses as State Unveils Modern Transport Hub – Ukaegbu 

The Abia State Government has announced plans to expand its electric vehicle transportation system to 100 buses before the end of the year as part of a broader strategy to modernise public transportation and improve mobility across the state.

The Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Chimeze Isaac Ukaegbu disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing and facility tour at the newly completed bus terminal in Umuahia, describing the initiative as part of the state government’s vision to build a safe, efficient and affordable transport network.

According to the commissioner, the Ministry of Transport is focused on formulating, implementing and regulating transport policies that will enhance movement of people and goods while supporting economic growth in Abia State.

Dr. Ukaegbu highlighted the introduction of the state-owned electric buses, which were launched in December with free rides offered to residents until February 28 before the system transitioned into commercial operations in March.

“We introduced an e-ticketing system where payment of fares is smart in nature. To ride on the buses, commuters are required to obtain the AbiaConnect card, which is issued free of charge,” he said.

He explained that the buses are fully air-conditioned and fitted with CCTV cameras, onboard entertainment systems and USB charging ports to improve commuter experience.

“Presently, we have 20 buses in operation, and government intends to add another 20 shortly, then 30 more later, with the target of reaching about 100 buses before the end of the year,” he stated.

The commissioner noted that the state government is also deploying AI-driven traffic lights and intelligent traffic management systems aimed at reducing congestion and improving traffic flow in major urban centres.

Speaking on the newly completed transport terminal in Umuahia, Dr. Ukaegbu described the facility as a centralised multimodal transport hub designed to accommodate different categories of transport operators in one location.

“The essence of this terminal is to have a central parking system and reduce the proliferation of parks scattered all over the town,” he explained.

He said operations at the terminal commenced in phases beginning with the state-owned green shuttle buses on May 18, while informal and formal transport operators would be relocated subsequently.

According to him, the relocation process followed extensive consultations with transport unions and operators across the state.

“We had several engagements with the operators and they are fully aware of the operational plans. They are happy to move into a more conducive business environment,” he added.

Dr. Ukaegbu further disclosed that the facility has the capacity to accommodate more than 377 transport parks and includes dedicated parking areas, loading bays and air-conditioned lounges for drivers.

Under the new operational structure, passengers will purchase tickets at designated ticketing booths before boarding vehicles from organised loading bays, a system the government says will improve orderliness and efficiency.

To ensure sustainability and proper maintenance, the state government has handed over management of the terminal to a facility management company, McMor.

The commissioner also revealed that Abia State is pursuing several major transport infrastructure projects, including plans for a deep seaport, railway integration and ongoing airport development.

“We are working towards having a deep seaport, and feasibility studies are already ongoing,” he said.

He noted that the Federal Government’s narrow-gauge railway project from Port Harcourt has already reached Aba and would eventually support rail connectivity across Abia State and neighbouring regions.

Dr. Ukaegbu also announced the commencement of operations at computerised vehicle inspection centres located in Umuahia and Aba, where motorists can obtain automated roadworthiness certification.

“The essence is to ensure that only roadworthy vehicles ply our roads in order to reduce accidents and improve public safety,” he said.

He added that the new bus terminal would be officially commissioned by Governor Alex Otti before the end of the month, with a new name expected to be unveiled during the third anniversary celebration.
