Abia Government Holds Solemn Assembly, Rededicates State To God

Otti recounts journey, assassination attempt; says administration founded on faith

UMUAHIA — The Abia State Government has held a Solemn Assembly and Covenant Renewal Service to rededicate Abia State to God.

The service, held on Thursday, September 24, 2026 at JAAC Secretariat, Umuahia, with theme “Remembering the Covenant,” was attended by top government officials, clergy and stakeholders.

In his address, Governor Alex Otti reiterated his unwavering faith in God and called on Abians to hold firmly to God.

According to the Governor, the essence of gathering was to seek God and commit to serving Him alone.

“As for me and my family, we shall serve the Lord. So, if you don’t understand why you are here, this is why you are here. And if you have not taken that decision, it is not too late to take it, because there is no other power,” Otti declared.

Otti recounted his journey into politics, including decision to leave thriving career in banking industry in 2014 to serve Abia. He recalled how his father-in-law questioned his decision to leave position as Chairman of Committee of Bank CEOs, describing politics as uncertain territory.

He also narrated how he survived assassination attempt in Abuja in course of his governorship ambition, thanking God for mercies and preservation.

Earlier, Coordinator of Solemn Assembly and Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, said Abia was in captivity for many years until God raised Otti to rescue state.

Nwachukwu recalled that after securing electoral victory in 2023, Otti and team observed seven-day fasting and prayer to rededicate Abia to God, noting that three years after, it became necessary to return in thanksgiving and commit next political dispensation to Him.

“The Lord has led us these three-plus years, doing marvellous things in our eyes. Today marks pivotal moment for our dear State as we gather to seek face of Almighty God, return to Him in heartfelt thanksgiving, and collectively renew our covenant with our Creator,” he said.

Delivering exhortation, Lead Pastor of Transforming Church International, Rev. Dr. Sam Oye, celebrated Otti and team for outstanding milestones within three years, commending achievements in road infrastructure, healthcare, education, fiscal responsibility and land reforms.

Citing Joshua 13:1, Oye said God acknowledged Joshua’s achievements but reminded him there was still more land to possess.

“The word of the Lord to us on this Covenant Renewal Day is simple: More land to possess. More work to be done. Vision must survive personalities, political parties and election seasons,” Oye stated.

The assembly featured intercessory prayers, praise and worship, with ministrations by Prophet Isa El-Buba and Apostle Ofo Nzimiro, and gospel artiste Bro. Cornelius Benjamin.
