Abia Govt Suspends Registration Exercise for Civil Service Promotion Exams

The Abia State Government has shifted the ongoing Registration Exercise for 2024/2025 Promotion, Conversion/Confirmation for Civil Servants in the State to a later date.

The suspension, reportedly authorised by the State Head of the Civil Service, Benson Ojeikere, may not have been unconnected with the unprecedented number of workers who turned up yesterday for the registration.

Over 2,000 workers were seen at the premises of the Head of Service on Monday to commence registration for the supposed promotion, confirmation/conversion exercise billed to take place at a yet to be disclosed date.

A circular dated September 4, 2025, sighted by the Eagle News, had been issued to that effect mandating all workers from grade level 01 and above who are due for promotion, conversion/confirmation to appear at the office of the Head of Service on Monday September 8, 2025 to collect registration codes before proceeding for the exercise.

But the exercise was suspended due to the perceived inability of the office of head of service to handle the overwhelming number of workers who had trooped out to take part in the exercise.

Meanwhile, some workers, who spoke in an interview, expressed displeasure at the way and manner the exercise was been handled, describing the office of the Head of Service as unprepared for such a task.

They further suggested that the exercise be moved to their various Ministries, Departments and Agencies, MDAs, or make a schedule list for different MDAs.

At the time of filing this report, the Head of service or his office could not be reached for reactions.
