Abia Govt Signs Operational Agreement with Transport Unions

The Abia State Government has signed and finalized operational agreements with transport unions ahead of the planned relocation into the newly constructed Umuahia Central Bus Terminal, a major transport infrastructure project championed by Governor Alex Otti.

According to the Commissioner for Transport, Chimezie Isaac Ukaegbu, the government held a series of stakeholder engagements with formal and informal transport operators to harmonize operations and ensure a smooth transition into the new terminal.

The new terminal, located in Umuahia, is designed to function as a centralized transport hub where commuters can access buses, minibuses, tricycles, and other transport services from one location.

Government officials said the facility would operate with “airport-style” standards, emphasizing orderliness, safety, structured ticketing, sanitation, and passenger information systems.

Officials also confirmed that transport unions expressed satisfaction with the arrangements and praised the project as one of the largest and most modern transport terminals in Nigeria’s Southeast region.

The Abia government disclosed that phased movement into the terminal had already begun, with Green Bus operations commencing first, followed by informal and formal transport operators.

The terminal is expected to support the state’s expanding electric bus system and future multimodal transport plans, including rail connectivity.

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Transport, Dr Obioma Nwaogbe, Presidents of the Four Major Motor Unions in the State were also present.
