The city of Aba was electric on Monday, November 10, 2025, as the Speaker Emeruwa Football Tournament made its highly anticipated debut at the historic Etche Road Mini-stadium.
The tournament, which is an initiative of the Abia State House of Assembly Speaker, Rt. Honourable Sir Emmanuel Emeruwa, which generated immense interest among football enthusiasts, got underway with colorful opening day events that drew sociopolitical groups, football enthusiasts and sports groups from across the city.

The opening day events began with a reception ceremony in honour of Sir Emeruwa, hosted by the organizing committee led by ex-Nigeria international and Wolfsburg centre-back, Mr. Emeka Ifejiagwa.
The ex-Nigeria international welcomed the Speaker and enlightened the crowd on the tournament’s objectives, highlighting its potential to propel the development and empowerment of young people.
The Speaker, during his remarks, expressed gratitude to the spectators and reiterated his commitment to promoting youth development through sports, declaring that the tournament will be a regular event that will continue to fuel football development in the state, even beyond his tenure as Speaker.

Thereafter, the Speaker presented football kits to each participating team represented by their coaches.
The highlight of the event was the ceremonial match-kickoff by Sir Emeruwa, which preceded a thrilling encounter between JJN Football Club and Raw Talent Football Academy, with JJN FC winning 3-1.
The Speaker was accompanied by State legislators, Honourable Lucky Johnson (the legislator representing Isiukwuato Constituency) and Honourable Anthony Chinasa, fondly called Abiola by admirers, who donated balls to the Etche Road All Stars.
The month-long football tournament features 16 teams from Aba North and Aba South Local Government Areas, with matches scheduled for Mondays and Saturdays at Etche Road mini-stadium and Ogbonnaya Onu Polytechnic football field.
