Ikwuano Wins 131 medals to Emerge Champions of 2nd Abia Governor’s Sec Sch Unity Games

The 2nd edition of the Abia State Governor’s Secondary Schools Unity Games has ended in Umuahia with athletes from Ikwuano LGA emerging the over all winners of the competition.

Ikwuano garnered a total of 131 medals comprising 45 gold, 45 silver and 41 bronze to emerge overall winners in the medals table with Umunneochi LGA as the first runners-up with 74 medals

The champion of the maiden edition – Umuahia North LGA, were the second runners-up with 53 medals.

Speaking at the closing ceremony for the competition, held at the Umuahia Township Stadium, the Abia state Governor, Dr. Alex Otti urged the students that participated in the games, not to underrate their performances.

The Governor represented by the Chief of Staff, Pastor Caleb Ajagba challenged the Mayors of the LGAs in the state to have facilities that would motivate the students in sporting activities.

“We are confident that as you (the young athletes) have started today in a very small way, tomorrow a great story will be told concerning you,” Otti said.

“So do not underrate what you are doing because there is a seed of greatness in you and tomorrow the world will be celebrating that greatness.”

The Champions in a jubilant mood

He assured of a better sporting activity next year as the stadium would have been in better shape.

Speaking also, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwobilor Ananaba expressed satisfaction with the achievements in the second edition, as many young talents have been identified.

Ananaba assured that government would nurture those talents to ensure they become professionals who would in future represent the state and the country generally.

In an interview, the State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George said the event witnessed high turnout with great enthusiasm.

George thanked the Governor for his interest in sports development and appreciated the Commissioner for Youth and Sports for his support.

He noted that there is an improvement in the just concluded second edition and appreciated the healthy competition withnesed in the games.

“Last year, Umuahia North came first. And you know it’s an urban area. But today, they were demoted to third position. Look at Ikwuano local government that came first, Ikwuano is semi-urban.

“They took first position. It’s something that one should wonder, how did it happen? You know, it’s like a magic.

The event was witnessed by many dignitaries, sports stakeholders and students from various LGAs in the state.
