Team Abia Emerges Champions in Handball Under 15 Male, Female Categories

The National under-12 &15 Handball Championship held in Umuahia has ended with Team Abia clinching the 1st positions in both male and female categories.

The event tagged ‘ABIA 2025,’ was organized by the Handball Federation of Nigeria in collaboration with Abia state government.

Speaking at Umuahia Township Stadium, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba said Abia state is appreciative of the fact that sporting activity has indeed fostered, peace, Love and unity amongst Nigerians.

Nwaobilor who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Cyril Nwaigwe, expressed delight over the success of the tournament, the trophies won by Team Abia and congratulated the athletes on achieving the feat.

He noted that the victory by Team Abia showed that the huge financial investments  made by Governor Alex Otti was not in vain.

Also speaking the Secretary General of the Handball Federation of Nigeria, Monica O, and the South East Representative, Sir Onyii Wamah appreciated the fact that handball has come alive again in Abia state, adding that before now, Abia state was known for its talents in  the game of handball.

In his speech the Abia State Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George described the championship as “perfect, well organised, everything went accordingly.

“You can see that there is much improvement in what we are doing in the state and the Handball Federation body is happy, you can see smiles on their faces

“I will continue to thank the government of Abia, led by Dr. Alex Chioma Otti and our amiable Commissioner for Sports Sir Nwaobilor Ananaba for a work well done.

According to him, hard work and commitment gave Abia wining, adding that emerging winners and getting first position in male and female Under 15 championship is first of its kind in Abia state. He said it is now true that beyond the sky is going to be the limit of Abia state in sports development

Reacting to their victory, one of the players from Team Abia Miss Orji Mercy Chioma expressed happiness to God for helping them to win the tournament.

She attributed their victory to the consistent training and encouragement from their coach.

The competition which had 20 states participated saw Team Sokoto winning the Under 12 Male Championship and Team Benue lifting the Under 12 Female Championship among other categories of prizes.
