Democracy Day: Abia NAWOJ Felicitates Nigeria, Reiterates Call for More Women in Politics  

Abia State Chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ has extended warm greetings to all Nigerians as the nation commemorates this year’s Democracy Day.

In a goodwill message endorsed by state Chairperson, Amb. Norah Okafor, NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for the empowerment of women and encouraging their active participation in politics, governance, and leadership.

The statement acknowledged the capacity, competence, and vision of women needed to contribute meaningfully to nation-building.

It called for greater support, mentorship, and opportunities for more women to contest, lead, and influence policies that affect our communities.

“Today, we celebrate not only our democratic journey but also the values of inclusion, participation, accountability, and equal opportunity for all citizens,” the release said.

“Democracy thrives when every voice is heard, and women must continue to have a seat at the table where decisions that shape our society are made.”

According to the statement, “As women journalists, we also recognise our responsibility to uphold the ethics of our profession,” reiterating their commitment to fairness, accuracy, objectivity, and responsible reporting.

“Through ethical journalism, we can promote informed civic engagement, amplify marginalized voices, and strengthen democratic institutions.

“As we mark this Democracy Day, let us work together to build a society where women are empowered, democratic values are protected, and the media continues to serve as a pillar of truth and accountability.

“Happy Democracy Day, and may God bless Abia State and the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” the statement concluded.
