FG, Abia Govt Launches Housing Project after Decades of Failed Attempts.

Governor Alex Otti has reaffirmed commitment to economic development and citizens’ welfare as the Federal Housing Authority (FHA), in partnership with Abia state government, flagged off a long-delayed mass housing project in Umuahia.

In his address at the groundbreaking ceremony, the governor emphasised that governance must focus on improving the lives of the people, stressing that economic activity driven by housing development would create jobs and reduce poverty.

He described the rising demand for housing in Abia as a positive development, reflecting increased economic activity and population return to the state.

“The welfare of our people remains our priority. When people have meaningful engagement and can earn a living, crime reduces significantly,” he said.

“It is a good problem when people are coming back home to invest and spend. That is how growth happens.”

Addressing land acquisition concerns, the governor disclosed that most landowners had already been compensated and advised those yet to receive theirs to urgently resolve issues surrounding their bank accounts so as to be credited.

The Managing Director of the FHA, Olatunde Ojo, commended the governor’s leadership, noting that the project became possible due to his vision and swift support.

He explained that the housing project would incorporate modern, digitised systems to ensure transparency and security of property ownership.

“Gone are the days when people worry about their lands. Our systems are automated and designed to guarantee safety and efficiency,” he noted.

Ojo also acknowledged the role of the Minister of Housing, Ahmed Dangiwa, whose leadership he said has positively impacted the agency.

Earlier, FHA Executive Director Peter Okpanachi outlined the project structure, noting that it would include direct construction, partnership opportunities, and serviced plots for individuals.

“This project will provide affordable housing and improve the overall living standard of the people,” he said.

The Commissioners for Land and Housing, Mr. Chaka Chukwumerije and Hon Chiemena Uzoije described the project as a landmark achievement made possible through strong collaboration between the Abia State Government and the Federal Housing Authority.

They noted that the initiative, first conceived about 18 years ago, only became a reality under the administration of Governor Alex Otti following the successful acquisition and handover of unencumbered land.

“This groundbreaking demonstrates the progressive partnership between the state and the federal government in advancing the welfare of our people,” one of the commissioners said.

The commissioners added that the housing scheme would not only address the state’s housing deficit but also stimulate economic growth by creating jobs and opening up new development corridors.

The Deputy Speaker of the Abia State House of Assembly, Hon. Okezie Mmeregini, praised Governor Alex Otti for what he described as purposeful and result-driven leadership, noting that the housing project reflects the administration’s commitment to development.

Similarly, lawmaker Obi Aguocha commended the collaboration between the state and the Federal Housing Authority, describing the project as a major step toward addressing housing deficits and improving livelihoods.

Community leaders and stakeholders described the project as a major breakthrough after nearly two decades of failed attempts.
