Abia Govt Condoles with Families of Accident Victims, Pledges Support

The Abia State Government has condoled with the families and loved ones of the fourteen persons who lost their lives in a fatal road accident that occurred on Saturday, along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway near the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu.

The victims were said to be travelling from Enugu when the vehicle conveying them collided with a trailer, resulting in the death of Eleven on the scene, while three others later succumbed to injuries sustained in the accident.

Reports indicate that many of those affected were traders operating within the Isi Gate and Bonny Street axis of Umuahia who were returning from a traditional marriage ceremony.

In a condolence message signed by Commissioner for Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection, Mrs Ngozi Felix, the tragic incident has brought immense grief to the affected families and the Abia State at large.

“His Excellency, Dr. Alex Chioma Otti, OFR, Governor of Abia State, has directed that the Ministry of Poverty Alleviation and Social Protection immediately engage with the bereaved families and injured survivors to assess their needs and coordinate appropriate support measures, including medical assistance and compassionate relief interventions,” the statement read.

The statement added that the State Government ‘stands in solidarity’ with all those impacted by this painful loss, assuring them of its continued support during this difficult period.

It also reiterated that government’s commitment to promoting road safety
awareness and collaborating with relevant authorities to reduce the occurrence of such tragic incidents.
