Governor Alex Otti will today flagoff the second edition of the Abia State Governor’s Secondary School Unity Games at the Umuahia Township Stadium.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Sports and Youth Development, Dr. Cyril Nwaigwe, who disclosed this to newsmen in Umuahia, said adequate preparation has been made to ensure a hitch free tournament.

Nwaigwe noted that the workers in the ministry are working collaboratively to ensure that the goals of the sporting activities are realized.

According to him, as part of the efforts to achieve the goals, different committees were set up with varied responsibilities assigned to them, adding that the overall objective of the Unity Games is to discover talents at the young ages.

“Some of the committees include one, the Security Committee. The Security Committee is in charge of ensuring that lives and items of property are fully protected during the layer of events,” Nwaigwe said.

“We did it last year. No life was lost. Nobody was molested. No property was destroyed. There was no fight. Peace reigned. Absolutely, during our last edition. We also hope that with the available security in this edition, there will also be peace during the sporting activities.”

“The second committee is that of medical. In order to ensure that our ministry gives proper medical attention, we have invited experienced medical doctors to be around in order to take care of medical aspects. Nurses are also available to ensure that medical attention is also given.

“We have also made arrangements for the provision of ambulances in case an athlete falls sick or collapses in the process of carrying out sporting activities.

“The third arrangement is the provision of accommodation for our athletes. This aspect is also important in the sense that some of our athletes are from far away places. Some of our athletes do not live very close to Umuahia Township Stadium.

“And as I’m talking to you now, we have provided reasonable facilities in those places where our athletes will sleep or will lodge during the period of the sporting activities.”

The Abia State Governor’s Secondary School Unity Games has been slated to run from Tuesday July 29 to August first with participants drawn from among secondary schools students in the 17 Local Government Area of the State.
