Gateway Game 2025: Team Abia to Depart Umuahia for Abeokuta, Today

Team Abia will today, May 16, 2025, depart Umuahia for the 22nd National Sports Festival, ‘Gateway Game 2025,’ holding at Abeokuta, Ogun State from May 18 to 30, 2025.

Director of Sports, Comrade Obioma George, who disclosed this to newsmen in Umuahia, said the opening ceremony will hold at MKO Abiola stadium Abeokuta on Sunday May 18, 2025.

Comrade George further informed that Team Abia, with a total of 306 contingent, made up of 208 athletes and 98 officials, will participate in 25 sports out of 40 approved by the national Sports Commission.

The officials include state delegates, medical team, kitchen staff, Secretariat staff, media team, drivers, police security team, management staff, curator, coaches, team managers, helpers for para athletes and other backup staff.

The Director of Sports assured that Abia will get a better position in this year’s event to beat the its past records.

He thanked the commissioner for sports Sir Nwaobilor Nwadinma Ananaba for his efforts in ensuring that team Abia will represent the state well not just to participate.

Comrade George also applauded tye State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti whom he described as the sports loving, for all his financial and moral support to ensure that team Abia will excell in this biggest sports meet in Nigeria

While assuring that team Abia will not fail the state, he called on all to pray for team Abia’s success in the tournament.

The Eagle News reports that Governor Alex Otti had on April 29 2025, received the Torch of Peace and Unity for the Sports Festival where he assured the Abia Team of State Government’s support and promised to reward every medal won in the tournament.
