Medical and Health Workers Union Visits Inmates at Umuahia Correctional Center, Presents Food Items, Toiletries, Others

Inmates of Nigeria Correctional Service, Afara, Umuahia custodial centre, have been charged to be of good conduct and hope on God for a better tomorrow as they undergo behavioral and societal reforms.

This is coming as the leadership and members of Medical and health Workers Union of Nigeria, Hospital Management Board (HMH) Umuahia branch visited to donate food items, toiletries and sanitary pads to them.

Speaking during the visit, the Chairperson of MHWUN, HMB branch, Comrade Chidinma Mary Wokoma said that they were concerned by the conditions of the prison inmates, particularly, the female ones.

Wokoma, while noting that the food and detergent were given to the inmates, the roles of sanitary pads for the female inmates to ensure sound health inside the facility,

She added that prayers and messages of hope were delivered to the inmates as part of May Day celebration from the branch.

“We are here to identify with them to make impacts in their lives. We prayed with them and gave them messages of hope believing that after this visit, that God will visit them positively. In the nearest future we pray to hear testimonies.”

Receiving the visitors, the Assistant Chaplain at Umuahia Custodial Centre, Kalu Josephate Chukwuemeka explained that some inmates need free legal representatives to perfect their release from the Centre and also reduce overcrowding inside cells.

He disclosed that many inmates at the centre are taking WAEC and NECO examinations inside the Custodial Centre and are being admitted into the National Open University of Nigeria, if they do well in their entrance exams.

The assistant chaplain thanked the Union members for their visit and informed them that many inmates are also in need of sowing machines and other equipment for those learning at the Correctional Centre’s workshop .

Meanwhile, items donated by the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria HMB branch included, carton of noddles, shaving sticks, biscuits, groundnut, tissue paper, detergent, hypo, bread and sanitary pads for the female inmates.
